It seems that there is quite a bit of confusion about how some company's market their vehicles and how the various types of drive systems are understood. There are many different ways of transferring the engines power to driving torque at any of the vehicles wheels. Also there are many different Acronyms for confusing potential customers at new car dealers.
List of abbreviations and acronyms:
FWD All engine power drives only the FRONT wheels.
4X4 All engine power can drive to the FOUR corners of the
vehicle, which usually has 4 tires.
AWD All engine power drives ALL wheels.
Here is a quote from the on line Encyclopedia for anything worth asking: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four-wheel_drive
Manufacturers often use these terms interchangeably, and the English word all is obviously equivalent to the word four when referring to a set of four wheels. In typical use, the terms are used as described above, but they are not fixed or legal definitions, and some manufacturers, such as Honda, often use the term "four wheel drive" when referring to systems that include center differentials. These terms are therefore not always very reliable for assessing the features and capabilities of a given drive train.
The point of this thread is to bring up the point that most people use either 4X4 or AWD when describing their Subaru. We at classicsubarujusty.proboards.com
Do NOT care to differentiate between the 2. Obviously if your car came as a FWD (Front Wheel Drive ) only vehicle, it is important to mention that when referring to it. Just as is the fact that it might be either 4X4 or AWD.
Either way ....you will not be called out on the carpet here for referring to it as either. your choice, we get the message, lets carry on and not bother about it! The world will continue to turn either way.
