A quick update on my EK42 engine rebuild, have got the head back from the machine shop, it checked out okay & has had a surface grind. Have also been able to source a chain that will be suitable for the balance shaft chain with the help of the machine shop. When I find out the details of the chain I will post them here for future reference. Have also ordered water pump, oil pump outer rotor, rocker cover & sump gaskets, rear main seal front cover crank case gasket genuine from my local Subaru dealer. The spare parts people are very helpful there. Have yet to order rings, bearings & remainder of gaskets & seals, they will be aftermarket. Cheers....lincolntbird. P.S. Just bought a set of Honda V65 pistons & rods to do an experimental EK42 engine rebuild with, this build may take a little while as there are a few things I would like to do, so updates may be well spread out .

Update update....ordered & received rings, bearings & full gasket set for the EK42 engine rebuild this week from Precision International . Very happy with their service & their pricing. I now have all the parts I need to do the engine. All I need to do now is modify the valve reliefs in the Justy pistons to clear the Ek42 valves & make up a new balance shaft chain from the Mitsubishi 4G54 balance shaft chain & it can all go together . Will keep you posted with progress.

Really cool tip on using the Mitsu chain!

Update on EK42 rebuild, Had the Justy pistons fitted to the Sherpa rods with no modifications to the rods necessary . Now to extend the valve reliefs in the Justy pistons to clear the EK42 valves .

So it is confirmed, The pistons and pins are slightly different dependant on whether or not the pin is retained with clips or is a press fit onto the rod. Either way the small end bore size for the pin on the connecting rod is always exactly the same size! Great news as far as using "Subaru" pistons go. However this might be a little more tricky when you go to use pistons and pins from another Manufacturer like a Honda motor bike piston.
Let us know about the valve reliefs.

Lookin real gooood!
Have you checked the deck clearance of the piston to head at TDC yet? I was concerned as it looked like those pistons had just a tad more than the EF12 piston's. That is good for even more compression unless it kisses the head and then all bets are of eh! Wouldn't be too tough to just remove some from the pistons right where the parts of heads chamber cut the corners so to speak.
Great job, show us your grinding tool, unless it is a hungry Tasmanian devel you have employed for the task. L.O.L.

Just a quick update on the EK42 engine rebuild, it has temporally ground to a halt whilst I sort out getting a couple of 3mtr x 3mtr tin sheds put together & set up as my workshop. As soon as I get things set up I will get the engine in there & get back into it . Soon I hope.

Gave the cylinders a quick hone out today... What did you use to hone the cylinders? Did you use a flex hone? If so what size? Cheers.

I used a 3 stone engine cylinder hone to do the job, they are adjustable. A flex hone/glaze breaker of approx 80mm should also do the job.
Cheers....lincolntbird.
