I need to replace the timing belt and accessory belt on my Australian delivered Sherpa. I ran the local auto place today to get these belts and they told me there were two timing belts listed for this car - a 107 tooth belt and a 109 tooth belt.
Could this be right? If so, is there any way I can find out which one I need? I see these things listed on eBay but they never specify anything about tooth numbers. Thanks.

More teeth makes for a longer belt which is used because something is bigger than the other. For example: there are 2 belts for the Justy EF engine. The EF10 or 1 liter has a smaller (Shorter block) to accommodate the shorter stroke of that engine. What I would do is to take off the top inspection cover over your timing belt. Line up the belt with something as a reference and either mark the belt with grease pencil or use some of the printing on the outside as a mark. Rotate the engine and count the teeth with the ignition off of course!

Got around to doing the timing belt on the Sherpa today. Actually, I didn't do it. I took it to my mechanic. He's used to building 800hp Evo's, Maserati's for Production Car racing or ARC rally cars, so he was quite amused when he popped the bonnet on the Sherpa.
There had always been an issue with timing on this car. If it's not set to full advance you simply can't drive it. There were some other issues too. It goes through points very quickly. There is literally nothing left of the points after 1500km. The ends are completely burnt away and the car won't go. I also needed the ignition wired up properly as I was getting sick of having to hot wire it whenever I needed to start it. When it comes to auto electrics, I'd rather give the car to someone that knows what they're doing, instead of me going by trial and error.
He changed the belts, points, plugs, condenser and wired the ignition. It runs MUCH better now but the points are still getting too much power. We suspect there is something going on with the resistor but it might be a job for another day.
Now that the car is running better, I might be tempted to get some shots of it. Maybe some action shots!

Well, here it is in full flight. Couple of shots flat out through a sweeping corner. The only reason it manages to stop understeering off the road is because it's so damn light. The suspension is SO bad on it though it still boggles my mind. Here's one in pretty wild oversteer, if you can call oversteer "wild" from a car like this. It actually rotates very quickly. A combination of the seized rear shocks and the very short wheelbase I imagine. The guy that took the pics couldn't stop laughing. It must have looked so ridiculous. The seats are from an earlier shape Sherpa and are pretty much shagged. You can see I'm struggling to stay in the seat in the pics. It's made worse by the fact there is no centre console or foot brace. Nothing at all to brace with inside the car. Chris.

Looks like the back tire is almost off the ground there. As far as needing a "Dead peddle" I totally agree. I really noticed the lack of something to brace my left foot against when I got the Vivio (Right hand steering) Before that with the Justy, which is left hand steering. It was good to brace against the wheel well. On this site there is a link to a collection of Subaru brochures. I think that they were offering a dead peddle for cars that are right hand drive. However these are getting old now so it would have to be a used item.
